Description
ColorFabb XT-CF20 is a copolyester based on carbon fiber binding material.
Composed of 20% carbon fibers, selected especially for 3D printing.
The idea of carbon fiber filaments is not new, however, colorfabb has succeeded in combining a number of desired properties into one single filament:
- Extremely high flex modulus (6.2 GPa) / twice as stiff as PLA
- Moderate expansion (8-10%)
- High glass transition temperature (80 °C)
- Very high melt strength
- Very high melt viscosity
- Good dimensional accuracy and stability
- Low odour
- Easy application on multiple platforms
- Attractive matte black finish

Carbon fiber is an abrasive material. It is recommended to pay particular attention to the wear of the pressure nozzle.
ColorFabb recommends stainless steel nozzles or hardened copper alloys.

Why?

It is not more stable than PETG in hot environment, is brittle in details.
I was hoping that was stronger and thermaly stable, like for something to be in a car a stand the temperature when there is sun.

Takes Some Practice

Good filament but it takes some time to dial in the setting to get the most from it. Throw out the guidelines by colorFabb- I don't know what they were thinking. Slow the print down to 20mm/s. Great write up at Hackaday . com for more info.
Very abrasive, very tough and has a great stealthy appearance.

Excellent filament. Not the quickest or cheapest. But wow is this stuff tough. super rigid and strong. if you can break it it snaps. But it takes huge amounts of pressure to to that. I strongly suggest not taping holes afterwards (only experience of break sections). 3D print with threads built in.

Qidi X-Plus with colorFabb XT-CF20

I first tried this with the hi temp extruder that came as an additional extra with my Qidi printer but the prints always failed after about half way with clogging. I put this filament back in storage and started using PETG.
After half a roll of PETG (that prints great but the finish isn't great and stringing is present) I got to thinking about the XT-CF20 again with the standard extruder on my machine. With very similar setting to PETG this was printing great so ordered a hard coated nozzle meanwhile.
This filament is now my go-to for my slot car parts, very light, very stiff, great finish and post processes very well as it can be sanded or filed. I tap all the threaded holes, these are M2.
As far as printer settings are concerned, 250C/60C, 35mm/s, 25% cooling, PVA smeared on the flexible print surface (which dries as the bed heats). I was using the textured side of the print surface but it got damaged trying to remove a PETG print so I removed the whole lot and have a smooth double sided flexible metal plate. So far I have a 100% bed adhesion success with this.
I often look for alternatives but why change when this is so good.
